Drink Yourself Pretty (AKA, Do “Beauty Teas” Actually Work?)

A couple of years ago, I would’ve argued that diet has zero effect on the skin. That was the line I’d been fed by dermatologists my whole life, and it was a pretty convenient one, too. It let me off the hook for my Sour-Patch-Kids-and-Diet-Coke lunches and gave me carte blanche to pop pills of the acne-fighting variety, complain to anyone who would listen when the pills didn’t work, and then eat more Sour Patch Kids to soothe the pain. Why me, Lord???

Today, I will shout it from the rooftops that diet is key for clear skin (not the key, but one of them). And by “diet” I mean everything that goes in: food, drinks, vitamins, supplements, everything. That’s why I was intrigued when Olive & June, everyone’s favorite LA mani-pedi spot, released their Beauty Tea Duo, crafted to support healthy skin, hair, and nails because they believe "beauty begins on the inside." As soon as I got the launch email, I clicked “Add to Cart.”

The Duo consists of a Rosy Matcha Tea and a Minty Lavender Tea (which you can buy separately, too), both of which are infused with flowers, herbs, and tea leaves that boost not only the health of your skin, hair, and nails, but also your mood, energy levels, and immune system. Here’s the ingredient breakdown:

Rosy Matcha

Rosehips: Full of Vitamin C, making this awesome for your immune system. Rosehips (which contain seeds from rose plants) also contain fatty acids that are known to help improve dark circles and hydrate dry skin.
Chamomile: Eases anxiety and stress and helps keep you (and your skin) calm.
Sencha: Balances your blood sugar and increases your energy levels.
Lemon Verbena: Tames inflammation, which is the cause of pretty much any and all skin issues.
Matcha Powder: Basically a superfood. It’s good for everything.
Horsetail: Rich in silica, which helps keep skin plump, hydrated, and glowing.

Minty Lavender

Spearmint: Known for strengthening hair, skin, and nails and regulates the nervous system.
Lavender: De-stresses the system and eases anxiety.
Peppermint: Soothes the digestive system and eliminates inflammation.
Horsetail: Rich in silica, which helps keep skin plump, hydrated, and glowing.
Chamomile: Eases anxiety and stress and helps keep you (and your skin) calm.
Beet Powder: Full of antioxidants and improves circulation.
Nettle Leaf: Stimulates hair growth and strengthens nails.
Licorice Root: Reduces inflammation and helps reduce redness and discoloration.

After sipping on these teas almost daily for a few weeks (they're fucking delicious, by the way), I have three words for you: Drink your skincare.
