I have a love-hate relationship with LUSH Cosmetics’ Oatifix face mask: I love how it instantly calms and softens my chronically dry skin (hey, I live in a desert) and I hate that it’s so fresh you can only buy it in physical LUSH shops, not online (again, I live in a desert). What’s a girl to do but DIY?
In my opinion, Oatifix is the face mask to rule over all face masks. Its main ingredient is fine oatmeal, which is soothing; followed by mashed banana to soften; and ground almonds to exfoliate. It smells so good that I literally want to eat this stuff off of my face, but I refrain because HOLY SHIT does it make my skin super-soft and dewy-feeling. If I have a bad day or am feeling dull, tired, or dry, Oatifix is my go-to. You just slather it on dry skin, leave on for 15 minutes, and wash off.
Luckily, since it’s made with mostly food-based ingredients, I was able to whip up a batch on my own after I ran out of the real thing the other day. My version doesn’t have the exact same consistency as LUSH’s, but my skin felt just as glowy and moisturized afterwards. Here’s how to make your own.
1 mashed banana
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin
A few drops of sandalwood essential oil (optional)
WHAT TO DO
Using a blender or food processor (or, if you’re old-school, a pestle and mortar), ground up the oatmeal and almonds
In a bowl, mix the resulting powder with your mashed banana
Add in the glycerin and sandalwood oil and stir
Put it on your face and leave for 15 minutes
Refrigerate any leftovers
I like to use this about once a week to keep my dry skin feeling plump and hydrated. It’s safe for all skin types and skin issues; I actually saw a big difference when I used this on a patch of dermatitis a while back. Considering that fall is here and winter will soon follow, it’s the perfect season to quench your skin’s thirst with an all-natural (and incredibly easy) DIY mask.
